We continue to read about digital photographers who deliver files rather
than film or prints. They are being asked to deliver CMYK files
equivalent to those delivered by color separators. They cannot do this
without knowledge about the press conditions, inks, paper, and many
other parameters.
I suggest the following:
Photographers:
1. Get the DISC standards at this URL:
http://www.disc-info.org/specifications/
2. Tell your designer or printer that you follow the DISC standards.
You must have a spectrophotometer to calibrate your monitors and
printers. You must be able to deliver a well calibrated Adobe RGB file
with proper grey balance.
3. If they want a CMYK file, you must insist that the printer supply a
CMYK separation profile. Be sure they supply a proof back to you.
If the people you are working with don't have modern software, measuring
equipment, and a color managed workflow, find someone who does. JUST
SAY NO!
I understand the vagaries of an offset press and know that you can move
the color quite far on press. However, with today's proofing systems,
you should be able to send a file to any group of proofers that have
been calibrated to a given standard and get the same proof off of any of
them within certain tolerances. Given this, the press person should be
able to match the proof.
Another way of saying this is to say that you can get full digital
process control from the creative process through the plate and proof if
you follow standards. This requires an investment in education,
standards documents, measuring equipment, and current software and
proofing equipment.
