Your renting was well taken.
The latest version of Heidelberg PrintOpen now includes a color quality
control module with dedicated color bars and strips to monitor a process
over time, tolerancewise. I hope that idea trickles down to other pieces of
CMS software over time too, like you.
In the meantime, the conclusion is not to take anything for granted.
I know, I know, engineering should be at that point where everything...well,
it is going to happen, one piece at a time. Take screen calibration. With
some systems, users define some ideal end point and the system takes care of
the rest without user intervention.
So, I think it's part of the evolution of CMS to embody more and more
controls.
