My patience with the whole CMS machinerey is decreasing. Have you
noticed how computers never have diagnostic tools that clearly tell
you where the error is ? Well, the same is true for CMS. I have just
done a fashion shoot. Decent images on screen. Print them on my 8500,
utter crap, darkened out. Remove my profile in PS, shifting to printer
color management (yes Vanessa, I know that Kodak has also hardwired a
profile into the printer driver itself), reprint, get the same dark
crap again. What I see on the screen is not what I get on the printer
although a month ago everything was perfect.
Now, I know I can dig out my spectro, profile my screen again (maybe
the monitor profile got corrupted ?), reprofile the printer, run off a
test print or two, etc etc. But how much of this crap is Joe User
supposed to stand ? Every Mac screen and OS and driver release seems
to have its idiosyncracies - dropped screen profiles, Epson driver
printing green suddenly, Cinema Display veering pink with a hardware
failure.
Enough! We need self-calibrating systems with clear pass/fail
indicators, test patterns to print on an inkjet that can be scanned
with a spectro in a moment and indicate pass/fail for the print chain.
Total color management failure every 6 weeks is no fun - and I just
have a small setup.
