<Hello
all,
We are looking at buying a large format printer and one of them that
catches my eye is the Epson Stylus Pro 9600. Does anyone out there have any real
world incite on this printer in relation to gamut, speed, and the ability to
match press runs. Any other info about this printer or a RIP for this printer
would be helpful.
Thanks>
The Epson 9600 is a
great machine. The gamut would be dependent on the inks (Ultrachrome or Photo
Dye) and type of paper you use. The Ultrachrome gamut actually exceeds the
photo dye in some respects and is more than adequate for press proofing. If you
use the Photo Black ink, you may notice the density is a little weak on your
proofs. Speed is ok (10600 is better, but you give up the light black ink).
We've been
using Epson 76/9600 and 4000's for proofing with great results, reducing
our Kodak Approval proofing by a large margin. We initially began wide format/remote
proofing using HP printers (5000 and 20ps), but the quality of the Epson proofs
(resolution, text rendering, dot pattern) was far superior and the color
was more stable.
As far as
Rips, there's a lot to choose from. We are using GMG Colorproof and I would
highly recommend that you check them out. www.gmgcolor.com. IMO its the best
product out there for colorimetric accuracy (not just my opinion...took 1st
place in this category in IPA Proofing RoundUp).
Mike
