<A couple of things to add:
1) Since the "color-matching" processes of these RIPs use no ICC
profiles - what are users sending to clients in place of a press/target
profile?>
GMG's profiles can be created from the same colorimetric data that
creates the ICC profile. So you measure data from a press sheets for
example to create an ICC profile for creating separations and
softproofing in Photoshop. You can take that same data and use it for
your target in GMG. Or is using TR001 or DTR004, that data can be used
as the target and the ICC profiles sent to the clients.
<2) In doing some testing here with Oris I found their deltaE numbers to
be rather "optimistic". I took the same measurement data into Measure
Tool and found that I had not improved at all over my current proofing
scenario (comparing measurements of TC3.5s and IT8-7/3 from press and
proofer). Anybody else done similar comparisons?>
I can verify that the delta E reading reported by GMG are nearly
idetical to those reported in Measure Tool. I measure an ECI in GMG and
compare it to the target to get a reported delta E. The same chart in
Measure tool compared to the same target data reports a nearly identical
value...I would say +/- .3
<3) Your experience seems to depend a lot on which proofer you have. For
example - I've got the KPG 5542 (HP 5500 with KPGs firmware) and Oris
does NOT like to play with this unit. The API's weren't written for it -
so use differed quite a bit from the "wizard-based" approach laid out in
the "manual".>
I've gotten a more consistent result using Epson 76/9600 and 4000 than
HP printers with GMG.
<4) Lastly, Oris apparently has 1 tech support guy: Lewis. And while
Lewis really knows the software, if he's out on site, or at lunch, or in
the potty you're pretty well screwed. No one else has a clue. GMG's
installation and tech support are farmed out to a color-consultancy who
never bothered to call me back when I wanted to test the product out in
my shop.>
I've always delt directly with GMG for tech support. Often talking to
guys over in Germany, so the time difference was a factor. But they now
have support in the US and as I've said before, they've always been
there for us.
