Lighting question -follow the standards and measure

Regarding the light quality discussion I would like to give a handful of additional comments. Considering the amount of parameters fluctuating in a graphic workflow, we would be dumbos not to eliminate the easiest one by having correct lighting in the production environments.

ISO3664/12646 specifies parameters for the light and environment, and they are not hard to acheive.

These are the main-part of the specs:
Critical comparison of prints: 5000K, Ra>90, 2000lx +/- 250lx, no reflections&neutral environment
Ambient light: Ambient light: 5000K, Ra>90, 64-32lx, no reflections&neutral environment

Finally the hardest part for most of us in any environment: "Regularly test all devices for adhearance to specifications". The verification of correct adhearing to specifications can easily be done with the excellent light-measuring option in the GMB iOne/Match software.

A fluorescent tube is not very stable and the lightbooth-manufacturers request to replace them once a year is in our (measured)experience not just a salesmans statement.

The coding of fluorescent tubes is not very hard to interprate, for example a L36W/950 code printed on the tube states that it is 36 watts, 9=CIE 1A CRI index 90-100, and finally 50 that is 5000-5400K. So this does not state that the tube necessarily is perfect vis-a-vis the ISOstandard. You can always be on the safe side and get Just Normlicht Color Control 5000 tubes that are 5000K +/- 200K and have a CRI of 96.

The implementing of correct lighting is vital for a color managed workflow.
It is cheap. It is not difficult to achieve. Just do it!
