We have an Epson 9600 printer with Oris RIP and an ICColor calibrator. We

test charts from the printers below an average Delta E of 1.0. Does anyone
have any suggestions???

First off, an average delta e of 1.0 is PRETTY DARN GOOD as long as the max delta e numbers are no more than about 4-6. I assume you're not using ICC profiles but instead you're using ORIS's proprietary device link profiles, true? You need to use their device link profiles to get the best results.

The first thing I would look at is the proofing media you're using. In my experience, "average" proofing papers will get you under 1.5 delta e but usually not much below 1.0. Premium proofing papers (GMG Semimatte and Dupont Chroma Pro XP papers to name a couple) are generally required to get you into that rarefied air of less than 1.0 delta e, in some cases (if the planets align just right) you can into the .5 delta e range. Less than that and you're getting into the repeatability limits of your spectrophotometer (that's what your iCColor is: a spectro not a "calibrator").

Other possibilities are that the print tests you're getting back are so "good" that they're exceeding the 9600's capability to match accurately. Doesn't happen often, but this can sometimes happen with pure magentas and blacks using Ultrachrome inks and a mediocre proofing media. SWOP TR001 isn't all that tough to hit but GRACoL TR004 is significantly more difficult requiring a combination of superior inks and proofing media to achieve the sort of delta e numbers you're looking for.

But that's all just a guess. :-)

Cheers,
Terry
