Chris,
I would say that being a color consultant is like being a musician. Neither
require you to have a license, which means that basically anybody can claim
to be one. However, if you're not that good, people will probably won't
listen to your "music". There is a large number that play, but a more
limited number of really good ones. Even if you're good, statistically you
stand to make a moderate living at it. If you're really really good (and
you've either got great PR, are very lucky, or happen to look good in a pair
of tight leather pants), you might make a very good living at it and
potentially have lots of color groupies.
This analogy goes further, but I will resist.
Long story short, I don't believe there is a lot of definition behind what
really qualifies a color consultant. At X-Rite, we are looking for ways to
better define color consulting with respect to our products and welcome
anything the list or "list-en-ers" would have to say about it. Both myself
and John Zimmerer will be in attendance at GATF - along with other X-Riters
- and would be happy to discuss these issues in person for those who care to
share.
Best regards,
Marc
