Hello ColorSync,
I am mostly a lurker, and live between the proverbial rock (my card clients)
and the hard place (various print services).
I have been providing client generated EPS and PDF files to the several
commercial printers that the card producer uses, but there is a lot of
problem getting these files printed.
The specifics on why these are not working is mighty fuzzy, and I hear that
some things don't look good because "the fax (the order form with the job
description - and return address for envelopes) was too poor quality to be
reproduced. (Fax?!) I have so far not been enlightened about the process or
the specs.
I have been generating more of the PDFs for my clients since they frequently
do not have any PDF generating applications. However, I run into problems
when I send the PDFs to the print services. I frequently get told they need
both a black & white version (PDF) and a color version (PDF).
What is the correct way to generate PDF(s) for use by a commercial printer?
I am thinking of getting Acrobat, so rather than making PDFs from Word,
Illustrator, or Photoshop (on the Mac), I could use Acrobat as a more
reliable environment for providing PDFs to the print shops.
Which version of the new Acrobat, Pro or Standard, would not have me
replacing the pre-press end of the print shops, but would help me do good
print PDFs for my clients that we don't land up losing our minds over.
Thanks for any comments on helping me get good logo and print PDFs into the
black hole of the printer process that I'm told to send them to.
Also, I am a bit confused by the descriptions of the the new Acrobat Pro and
Standard. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, but I do want it easier
to send high quality print PDFs to the print services. Is there any quality
difference between Pro and Standard?
Thanks!
- Sharon
