Another alternative is the paper, which I know has "matte surface
regions" or "bronzing" issues in some of the darks passages. The areas
under discussion have matte surfaces that are glossy just before the
"stepped" problem occurs. This suggests the paper may have some part
in
the problem. The same image on Ep Prem Luster showed less distinct
"step" artifacts, while the same image on Ep Enh Matte shows absolutely
no step artifacts; all made using Atkinson profiles.
Are all these stocks running in the same fashion? Or do you have
different linearization/calibration/ink limits for each? At first blush
it sounds like maybe an inappropriate ink limit for the Semi-gloss in
both the proofer set-up and perhaps in the profile. Are you certain of
your proofer set-up for the use of the profile?
