Hello Roger,
With Canon drivers on windows, it is essential in Photoshop's print with
preview to go to advanced, colour settings, and then to choose 'Print space'
and then select the profile for the printer (which on XP is listed, probably
Canon BJ something) you will then have perfect colour.
Canon canned profiles are among the most accurate I have come across for
desktop printers, but this anomaly means that many people suffer poor colour
from otherwise excellent printers.
