measured or how this was calculated?
This refers to the dot gain that LaserWriters had. When I diffusion dithered images at 300 dpi in Photoshop for printing to a LaserWriter, I had to shift the gamma (midpoint) about the difference between 1.8 and 2.2 to lighten the images first (but in the other direction), so that the dot gain from the printer would bring a 50% gray back to 50% density. So the theory (bordering on an urban myth) is that for uncorrected applications the same would be true on screen: using a gamma of 1.8 would more or less match the output of the raw file with dot gain.
