Dear list,
I think following explanation could bring some more clarity to the EIZO
CG220
14Bit issue.
Eizo ColorEdge ASIC:
Eizo ColorEdge CG220 has 2pcs of LUT in its ASIC G4Plus(Eizo developed).
1st LUT is 14bit and 2nd LUT is 10bit. 1st LUT handles color calculation
and
2nd LUT is in charge of generation of color palette to view.
Accuracy of each color in 2nd LUT depends on the 1st LUT calculation
ability. If we compare 2 types of monitor(1: 10bit LUT but each color is
inaccurate, 2: 10bit LUT and each color is accurate), the color on the
monitor 2 would be closer to original data.
Since both of the OS Windows and Macintosh and all of the applications,
10bit is enough for color palette to view(2nd LUT) since 10bit is 4
times
higher number than 8 bit. However, it is not enough to use 10bit for
calculation especially in low video level. That is why we implement
14bit
ability to generate accurate 10bit color palette.
In summary, CG220 has 2 LUTs. 1st is 14bit for "accurate color
calculation" and 2nd is for "color palette to view". The combination of
these
2 LUTs makes picture on ColorEdge consistent and reliable.
More detailed information will be mentioned in white paper of CG220
which comes in a
month.
With best regards / Mit freundlichen Grüßen

Update from Eizo...
>Regarding 10-bit: the press release from Eizo's website states
"ColorNavigator provides 10-bit hardware calibration of the monitor when
used with EIZO's CX1 colorimeter or select
>GretagMacbeth Eye-One products".
