Hi Roger,
I think the reason for cyans being "bluer" can be attributed to two
factors ink quality and ink density. In my conversations with ink
companies, if I ask which of their inks conform to ISO 2846-1, they
usually answer something like, "All of our inks conform to the ISO
standard".
Secondly if you look at ISO 12647-2, the Stauts T density value listed
for Cyan in Annex B is 1.52. The LAB values listed for Cyan on page 6
for Type 1 paper are L 54 A -37 B -50 which is L 54 C 62.2 H 233.5.
Although GRACOL lists a density of 1.40 for Cyan. As the density climbs
higher the hue shifts bluer. If you look at the spectral reflectance
curve the lower portion of curve bottoms out and the shape of the
spectral reflectance curve changes as the density climbs higher. Thus
the reason for ink limiting in inkjets. I think the overall trend is
towards printers running higher densities. Personally, I split the
difference between GRACOL and ISO 12647-2 and run our densities in the
middle of the two. That way we are reasonably close to both standards.
What were the densities of the cyans that had a hue angle of 235?

I find a lot of printed cyans (100% cyan) at the printers I profile to
have a hue angle of 235 degrees. I always had TR-001's 227 degrees Hue
angle in the back of my mind as a more representative cyan. The other
day, I was profiling a Heidelberg QuickMaster DI and also found 235
degrees. I thought, then, that 235 was on bit too much on the blue side
of the equation but later, having measured other litho offset presses on
glossy coated, even Fuji ColorArt, it all measured the same cyan hue
angle of 235 degrees.
I'm curious on the prevalence of this bluish cyan in the industry in
2004.
