I'm reaching out to the list to give me some insight on the ideal room
luminance considering my set up. We are product photographers, so we
are matching product to the monitor as well as evaluating proofs. For
monitors we use Eizo CG21 which we profile 1st with Capture Navigator
then with Basic Color 2.5.4. This part works very well for us.
I want to fine tune our proofing light and the room light. I replaced
all the tubes with GTI bulbs. My proofing light is a GTI luminare with
no lens. Over the color station we have an open flourscent fixture
mounted facing straight down 8' above the desk, ceiling is black. The
proofing light is about 4 feet to the right of the monitor and does not
fall directly on the monitor. The color temp readings I get with my
Broncolr meter is within 50 degrees of one another. The room light
fixture is wired so either 2 tubes come on or 4 tubes depending on
brightness desired. My thought is to have only 2 tubes on during
critical imaging & color. No direct light is falling on the monitor
screen. With 2 tubes I get an exposure of F1.4 2/10 @ 1 sec.falling on
the screen, and F4.0 falling on the desk. If I switch all 4 tubes on I
get about F 2.0 5/10 falling on the screen and F 8 falling on the desk.
All of these reading are taken with my Broncolor meter set at 100 ISO.
I have no idea how this computes out to lux or if it even matters.
As far as I know the theory with CRT's was you needed to keep the room
so dark since the monitor was so dark. Now we have these LCD monitors
which can be run quite bright, and we are able to measure our proofing
light so we can match our white point in the monitor. Given all of
this what is the recommended brightness of the light falling on a desk.
The other part of this is how bright we run our Eizo and what's the
consensus on how often we need to re-profile with the LCD's?
Thanks in advance,
Stretch
