It seems like it is the equivalent of taking a color RGB image in Photoshop, selecting "desaturate" to convert it to RGB
grayscale and then separating using a normal profile.

does it somehow do more than this?

I've been asking nearly everyone I run into whether they use this function or see value in it but I have yet to have anyone
who did, or does. I'm not trying to be negative I really want to learn more about it.
Steve,
As a photographer, I have to say most definitely that this tool is NOT for doing conversions from colour to BW and in my
opinion should not be thought of in that context. In other words, the numbers in the file need to be spot on before applying
this profile. I suppose, not unlike with any digital data. :-)
I value it for being able to print neutral grey values without having to struggle with the possibility of colour shifts that are
sometimes inherent in full colour gamut inksets. This is of course subject to the original colour output profile being of top
quality.
Where this has worked in real life is to make printers like the Epson 7500, which were reputed to have been very difficult to
get an acceptable BW print from, gain an added lease of life. A big saving on upgrading to the 7600!
As to what is going on 'under the hood', I have to refer you to the author Chris Halford at iccTools.
Regards
Richard
