I haven't seen this article, but about 1.5 year ago prepared a test suite
of images that was split between 8 and 16 bit images. Each image was
heavily edited with over 20 serious edits per image. Then I had a group of
color experts ( at a conference) examine the 25 or so prints. I used
images that were theoretically at risk and would fall apart.
The results from this group of experts clearly indicated that they were
guessing which images were 8 or 16 bit. These (20+) experts were right about
50 percent of the time. So they clearly could not see any distinct
difference. Yet a lot of this histograms looked ratty. This leads me to
recall real world comments from the folks on the production line: We donĀ¹t
sell histograms, we sell color proofs etc.
Is is a bad thing to work with 16 bit files today? Nope. And it can be
comforting for those who have to have that warm fussy high-bit feeling.
And Photoshop now has the tools so it is quite good for high-bit data.
So my view is that, if you want to use high-bit images then go for it.
Is is a bad thing to work with 8 bit data? Nope!
Will your images then be ruined? Today, there is no hard evidence from
printed results that shows that!
Technically does it matter? Only in a few cases. There are situations
(with less than 5% of the images) that do demand high-bit data for image
editing.
