Good B&W from color inks remains a dubious endeavor.

I have PrintOpen v5 and according to my limited understanding (only 24 hours
in a day), I see that there is an option to directly create a "gray" profile
right from CMYK target measurements data. One can either create a CMY "gray"
profile or a straight K-only "gray" profile.
It may require spectral measurements to create this kind of profile or
straight Lab or XYZ data, I am not sure. Right now, I just opened up a
measurement file for an inkjet printer I measured with my ICColor using an
ECI2002 test chart. I am going by the Profile Generation Setup dialog box.
I'll try to post some screen grabs for those interested. It's an incredible
piece of software, if you want my opinion.
