Jim, QTR will let you configure any inkset any way you like. The
"Quadtone" moniker is a bit misleading. The approach to B&W with
Ultrachromes using the two K inks serially up the scale, then minimum
amounts of the color inks to neutralize or tint, as in the ImagePrint or
possibly ColorBurst fashion is easily configured and user linearized
with QTR, for $50 shareware. That was what I was referring to.
Regarding the quad vrs 4 color grayscale print methods-
Let's just say opinions vary, wildly and adamantly. I've entered into
this argument before only to realize the commercial interests aligned
and prepared to do battle with me were overwhelming and the battle
futile. If you are after the very best, why does one printer need to do
it all? Why not use the right tools for the job? Perhaps the "job" is
defined differently for different people. I can say many extremely
discerning people will disagree with those experts and leave it at that.

Using either the ImagePrint or ColorBurst RIP will do this.

As will QuadtoneRIP for far less money, and far more user control
including hardware linearization.
Any other good RIP with some user talent as well. StudioPrint, etc..

Tyler,
Earlier this year we had a meeting of imaging experts at my office and the
Color Burst folks brought quad ink prints and four color Epson prints of
grayscale images. The experts could not see the differences easily and in
some cases were just guessing at which was a quad ink set vs the 4 color
grayscale ink set. This lead me to the conclusion that of why have a quad
printer and then a color printer when you can have one printer to produce
both grayscale and color prints.
