“The experts
could not see the differences easily and in some cases were just guessing at
which was a quad ink set vs the 4 color grayscale ink set. This lead me to the
conclusion that of why have a quad printer and then a color printer when you
can have one printer to produce both grayscale and color prints.”
The quad black days are
over, there are too many downsides to these aftermarket inks, and the market is
very small compared to what it was a few years ago. Almost all of these
aftermarket inks ( I won’t name names but I’ve run almost every
one) are famous for clogging, especially if you don’t run the printer
every day. Almost none of the B+W inksets work with RC papers, so you are stuck
with fine art media for everything. You are stuck with the “warmth”
or “coolness” of the particular inkset, unless you get into
something like Studioprint where you can turn off specific cartridges. Who
wants to dedicate a printer to B+W printing unless that’s all you do, and
you’d better do a lot to justify the expense. Finally with the Ultrachromes
what is the point? There are a few RIP’s out there that really just
eliminate the need to dabble with these B+W inks unless you view your prints
under a 20x loupe. Epson is also less than helpful when you screw up your
printer running aftermarket inks. With machines like the 7000 you can’t
even get new head when you trash them, you get refurbished heads that are
usually lame. A 7000 with stock inks will probably run forever.
