Roger, thanks for your reply. I agree with your comments, which have
helped focus my suspicions. Though I'm told linearization has been done,
unfortunately I'm working long distance with someone and I can't verify
the ColorBurst RIP being used has been tightly nailed down. The profile
itself reveals things may be less than ideal.
Additionally however, my limited experience leads me to believe some
profilers are better down the neutral axis than others, or perhaps it a
function of settings as there are related options in PM.
We did succeed in getting a much lower percentage of CMY to K by
limiting total ink, why that should change things at the neutral axis
with the same MaxK setting escapes me a bit. MaxK is MaxK, no?
Thanks,
Tyler

Tyler,
Just a quick comment about the following. You wrote :
When converting RGB neutrals to this profile, there is an unexpected
(and in this case undesirable) amount of CMY present (not well done I
might add, lots of crossover).
Regarding crossovers, isn't this a function of the process you're profiling
and not as much a function of the profiler you're using? The fact that there
are "lots" of crossovers may indicate "lots" of non-linearity in each
primaries tone value increase and not necessarily a weakness in the
profiling package.
Generally, the receipe to make neutrals out of C+M+Y will be sort of
proportional or at least remain relatively constant as we go from shadows to
highlights. That's an indication that a process is well behaved, such as
TR-001. But I have worked on presses and printers where there are "lots" of
crossovers. It's not necessarily a bad thing per se, profilers should be
able to compensate for that. But, I agree, that this is disturbing finding
and is certainly a sign that additional work needs to be done *before*
profiling starts.
Has anyone ever attempted to "linearize" a printing press, prior to
profiling?
