including PhaserMatch's linearization routine in your procedure (also done
using a spectrophotometer)?

I think what he meant is to use the spectrophotometer with PhaserCal instead of the "visual" calibration that they offer as an alternative. You would definitely want to perform this calibration prior to outputting your CMYK test charts for profile creation. To my knowledge PhaserMatch does not build printer profiles, it just gives the user the ability to control device drift (due to environmental fluctuations and hardware wear & tear).
