You might want to keep in mind that Photoshop and other

your internal and external names are different, it might be
confusing.
Yes. That's why I was asking about the maximum length of internal names:
I specifically don't want my internal names to be different from the
file names, and I was afraid that the limiting factor would be the
internal name length rather than the operating system imposed maximum
filename length.

Personally, I tend to stay with 30 to 40 characters profile name.
But that's still a compromise because I'd like the profile name to
capture as much information as possible on all kinds of profiling
conditions and profile generating options such as kgen, TIL, edit
modifications, profiler used, which, invariably I end up coding with
abrevations that, after the fact, I dont find as meaningfull as
stating the full condition name.
It's a work in progress :)
That's what I'm trying to do.
I want to create a company-wide formalism for profile naming that
captures as much information in the file name as possible using a
"standard" set of abbreviations in a prescribed order, though I don't
think I'm trying to capture as much information as you are.
I've pretty much resigned myself to a multi-tiered approach: A
filename that captures the most important details, in a standard
abbreviated form, and a database of profiles with the abbreviations
expanded, additional fields added and sections for notes and etc.
Thanks again,
