Try converting to Lab instead from your custom scanner profile. I know it
does not sound logical but please give it a try. Converting to Lab should
not get you any clipping, IMO. If you still have clipping then there is
something wrong with the scanner profile, most likely. Once you got your
image in Lab in Photoshop, try converting it to RGB, RelCol, and see if you
still get any clipping.
Alternatively, you could / should try to open your RGB test image in
ProfileEditor and see what Lab values you get when editing with that ONE
custom scanner profile workflow. The Lab values from ProfileEditor should be
comparable to that from Photoshop.
Alternatively, you could experiment with Alwan ColorPursuit. The demo won't
work with your custom scanner profile but I would expect whathever results
you get there should be on par with what Photoshop gets and what
ProfileEditor get, because these guys are very good ColorSync citizens.
