If it's tone clipping, it's likely that the material being scanned has a wider dynamic range than the profiling target, and the fix is to back off on the black and white points in the scanner settings when building the profile. If it's gamut clipping, doing the above may help, but you'd probably get better results from the HCT target than from an IT8.

Irregardless of gamut or tone clipping or the choice of characterizing target, do you have a preference for an all-around, RGB working space, in which to carry your edits, Bruce? I know at one time you were happy with ProPhoto. Do you still feel that way?
