When 50% of the work can be processed in 8 bit and no one notices the
difference, it is both expedient and acceptable.
When the remaining 50% of the work requires edits which are simply not
going to meet high expectations, then 16 or even 32 bit options are
great tools.
Single shot digital camera files are not nearly as robust as 8 bit
scans. Problem digital camera files require a gentle touch if the
highlight, shadow or broken color data needs to be massaged. 16 bits
should help, but 32 bits in floating point tiff capability has saved
some delicate highlight detail, based on a couple years of experience
with Photogenics and HDRshop software.
