Ken notes some great HDR references.
A few more areas where 16 and 32 bit are the ONLY way to achieve the
required results:
Blue/Cyan sky contrast adjustments - Only a few bits of data in many of
these problematic transitions under 8 bit. Same is true for underwater
photography.
Yellow/Magenta flesh tone adjustments - Tonality often breaks harshly
in 8 bit images, especially where the IR filter in the camera has
failed to fully correct, leaving a marked red fleshtone bias
Preparation of photo images for deriving computer graphics special
effects - i.e. Matrix Trilogy, Spiderman, the Automobile industry's
adoption of CG, advertising, and trick new technology (set your TIVO
for May 14/Discovery Channel/Alien Planet)
Try sunsets.
