Sweeping generalizations? I don't think it's fair to say that people are not
naturally inclined to look for some level of generalization
(simplification). Color management as a field is complicated enough that
when in comes to making 8 bit vs 16 bit worflow policies it's only natural
that people are looking for a way to simplify their life. You have long
found for yourself that in MOST instances, when you're not capturing screen
dialogs at least, that 16 bit gives you the quality you require (you've been
bitten, bla, bla, bla). But understand that a large number of folks don't
want to complicate ther life further and they'll be happy just to have ONE
set of numbers to worry about. So which will in be: 16 bits or 8 bits? I
tend to tell them the former.
There's nothing wrong with trying to simplify one's already complicated
color life with sweeping generalizations that result in simplifying
workflow. And I grant you that converting 8 bit screen grabs to 16 bit would
be silly.
