Most usual media can't reproduce speculars (like a print or
CRT). To properly reproduce speculars you would need a true
HDR display of some sort (such things exist, they are just rare
at the moment.)
The practical compromise though, is that if you have the specular
information (say a HDR image), then you can apply various rendering
algorithms to reproduce the impression of highlights on a normal media.
There have been quite a few articles on such things in SIGGRAPH and
other journals over the last 10 years or so.
For instance, in order to conserve the highlights energy, it may
be desirable to make the highlight larger in area, when rendered
to limited conventional media.
