I maybe wrong but that issue does not seem to me like it's a function of bit
depth but rather out of gamut mapping. I've seen it many times on portraits,
you get this banding effect on an otherwise beautiful female model face, on
the forehead and everywhere else you describe. That's one reason I'll stick
with perceptual rendering in those cases where gradation is critical.
