Based on those test, it is necessary to determine what makes sense."

Those tests I've done.

On my systems, with my tools and my editing practices, the speed hit I take from doing everything in 16-bit is certainly more than offset by the time and effort taken to identify and redo the problem images if they're 1 in 10 as your client reported (1 in 10 pretty much agrees with my experience).

If the problems only surface in 3 in 100, time-wise it's probably a wash, but identifying and redoing the 3 in 100 requires human decision-making and disrupts the workflow, while the 16-bit workflow is a comparative no-brainer. (3 in 100 may not sound like much, but I remember the dubious pleasures of working with OCR programs that offered 97% accuracy....)

I agree that everyone needs to make their own call, preferably based on empirical testing, and I agree that everyone's mileage will vary.

I would, however, steer clear of service bureaus who told me that I needed to replace my scanner or camera because their workflow couldn't handle my images correctly, or that I needed to go and reshoot the winning touchdown at the SuperBowl because the shot was 1/2 stop under. Then again, said service bureaux would probably prefer that I steered clear of them anyway!

FWIW, I and the majority of my clients deliver print-ready 8-bit images. You don't need to know how we got those images, you just need to print them.
