I believe that stochastic printing will eventually be
available for low end and short run printing in the
near future. The printers that are using this
technology now are mostly aiming at the higher
end/long run print market.
Ray Maxwell summed up the advantages very well.
Stochastic printing also yields some gamut expansion
too (more color saturation and resolution) which is a
plus for fine art reproduction.
To reply to some previous posts on proofing...for low
end printers, they are used to aiming their presses at
a dot proof. Those who embrace modern techniques will
make their proof simulate their presses using color
measurements.
After many years of scanning to Matchprint type proofs
and seeing the outcome on press, I vote for measuring
the destination device (press) and using that data for
color separation and proofing to predict the final
result.
