display colour change I had intuitively considered L*,0,0 would be the
white point of any space, as if the whole model changed

I have been watching
the neutral row of the colorchecker and using absolute in the color
settings box to read back the lab values as you described. This gives
me the impression L*,0,0 is 5000K and L*-2,-14 6500K = is that
correct?
You'll get different answers depending on which white point
adaptation technique is used, but it's in the ballpark of a*-2, b*-14
or so, yes.
