It's American Can, a.k.a: Pechiny, a.k.a: Alcan. They've got the lock
on paper/poly/foil overwraps for Instant milk, and actually, it's been
32 years that they've been running this label. Originally it was roto,
but switched to flexo in the mid-80's.
After doing some research, though, their description of the process as
"Somba screen (Groovy Screen)" is a bit questionable. A Samba screen
transitions from a stochastic screen in the 3/4 tones to a half-tone
screen in the mid-range, then back to stochastic. Groovy is just that -
grooves, not cells, and is used primarily in the 3/4 tones (that's dark,
right? I've been too long in RGB) because it can carry more ink. The
problem came about because a gradation was on the same plate as the line
work, and by the time the hammered it enough for the solids, their 2%
dot that spreads to a 10% dot, becomes a 20% dot. Not much good when
you want to fade to white.
Thanks for the link.
