Title: Re: Shiraz Rip
Jim,
Thanks for your kind reply. Now that you mention it, I remember hearing of the "RIP Report," but I never had the opportunity to read it. I am certain that the part where you explain what a RIP does, how it works and what it is good for, is still valid and not out of date. But much of the remaining information is necessarily obsolete by now, due to the rapid changes in the industry.
That's why I was thinking more about something in the spirit of a regularly updated resource, like a web site, a sort of "Consumer Report for RIPs," where changes and additions are made periodically, one that is not bound by the physical limitations of a print run, like the once valuable "RIP Report" was. This constant updating is what makes great sites like <http://www.dpreview.com>, or <http://www.PhotoshopNews.com>, or the Oxford Dictionary site (<http://www,oed.com>), for that matter, where the constant changes of the English language are reflected almost in real time thanks to the lack of the physical constraints of print.
Though your advice makes sense in the abstract ("find a handful of rips that seem to make sense to you and your clients and then learn and work with them and figure out what works and what is broken"), it is harder to do than it appears. For example, how do you determine the "handful" out of the 70-plus RIPs? Based on which criteria? How do you know that you are not picking the runt of the litter and are going to spend precious research time on a bunch of inferior packages? No one wants to find out that it's what they ended up doing. And how do you figure out "what works and what is broken" without either forking out the dough and buying them (fine if you can afford it, but not feasible if you can't), or having access to someone who already has them (which far from everybody can do)?
The thing that most confuses me is that I may be missing a truly great RIP out there that I just have no way to test myself and that I cannot afford to buy on spec without knowing whether I may be wasting my meager finances on something that isn't any good.
If anyone at all could possibly put together something like this, he/she would have a permanent place in my firmament of personal stars.
