An interesting claim was made by one of the speakers at the post-CIC conference, and that was that the explanation as to why the L* curve follows a power 3 curve rather than a log (ie. ratiometric) curve, is the presence of "flare" (or stray light scattering) within the human eye. Apparently if this flare is modelled and accounted for, then the response of the receptor cells appears to be essentially logarithmic.
