An interesting claim was made by one of the speakers at the
post-CIC conference, and that was that the explanation as to
why the L* curve follows a power 3 curve rather than a log (ie.
ratiometric) curve, is the presence of "flare" (or stray light
scattering) within the human eye. Apparently if this flare is
modelled and accounted for, then the response of the receptor cells
appears to be essentially logarithmic.

That's an interesting theory. In the interest of this thread, I'd like
to add that the CIELAB model is something like a "black box" model for
perceptually equal color differences. It doesn't really matter what the
underlying cause for the perception is. Only that CIELAB works pretty
well as a model of the "whole" system.
