Dear List Users:
This is in response to Ray Maxwell's post dated
12/7/05.
The PANTONE solid to process coated library resident in
the Adobe Photoshop 7.x and later was produced with explicit CMYK values taken
from the PANTONE solid to process guide coated. In the copy pages of the
Guide, we outline the press conditions that existed at the time the Guide was
printed, in terms of the following data:
Print rotation: KCMY
Wet Ink Target Densities: K=1.75, C=1.30, M=1.42,
Y=1.00
Line screen: 175 lpi
Paper Stock: #1 grade 60 lb gloss
cover
Dot Gain Target Measurements
Although this workflow may include elements of SWOP(R),
Gracol, FOGRA, etc., it does not conform to any one standard in its
entirety.
You can certainly use an ICC profile to convert L*a*b*
data to more accurately conform to your particular printing conditions. My
point in my original post was simply how to obtain consistent CMYK simulation
data from the three Adobe Creative Suite apps, and have the data conform to the
PANTONE solid to process guide coated, circa 2000.

Hi John,
When PANTONE built the tables that you refer to
below, did they use SWOP, GRACOL, or FOGRA?
What are the printing
standards used in the PANTONE tables?
If they don't comply with any of
these standards would it not be more accurate to use a profile for the standard
and let the Adobe algorithms do the coversion?
Just
asking...

There is a much
simpler solution to this problem.
In Adobe
Photoshop, simply choose the PANTONE color from the library explicitly labeled
PANTONE solid to process. This library contains explicit CMYK data
supplied to Adobe by Pantone, rather than using Photoshop's algorithms to
convert to CMYK. If you pick the colors from the PANTONE solid to
process coated library, the values will be consistent with those native to
Adobe InDesign 2.x and Adobe Illustrator 10.x and later.
