Hi Marco,

Coming from Europe myself though living in the U.S., I am very curious to
know what others in this forum think would be best in Europe for situations
where the output is unknown and a CMYK file is requested.

Quoted from the Readme that comes with the ECI (ISO) profiles:

The ECI recommends consistent use of the new profiles
a) because they reflect current international standards and
b) because they also give a true indication of colors that can
be realized using standardized printing procedures.
...
The “offset” package contains four ICC output profiles for offset printing.
The European Color Initiative recommends to use ISOcoated.icc as the
default setting for the CMYK working space in Adobe Photoshop and elsewhere.

which is stated somewhere else, but I must admid I forgot the source!

If the final destination is known, read on:
<
...
This profile (ISOcoated.icc) is valid for offset printing on gloss- or matte-coated paper.
The other three ICC output profiles in this package are valid for uncoated paper
(one for white (ISOuncoated.icc) and one for yellowish paper tone (ISOuncoatedyellowish.icc))
and for light weight coated paper (LWC) (ISOwebcoated.icc) used in web offset printing.
Thus the “offset” package covers all shet-fed and heat-set web printing conditions in the ISO
offset printing standard.
