The nice thing about QTR ICC's is that instead of using kTRC tags
the A2B and B2A tags are used. It creates a LAB <--> Gray profile.
The LAB to Gray is pretty much just a transfer curve with BPC
incorporated.
The Gray to LAB though is full color so the soft-proofs can show the
color tone of your B&W print.
The data input is from a txt file formatted similar to the Eye-One data
or any columnar data. Several targets are available -- 21 or 51 step --
along with Reference files for using MeasureTool in scanning mode.

Isn't that all a greyscale ICC profile is? At least the outbound leg.
I still use ColorSynergy to create grayscale ICC profile. It looks like
they're using kTRC tags. With more points, though, than Photoshop's.
So,
yes, Steve, it looks like the same idea.
At least, ColorSynergy is able to create grayscale profiles directly
from 1
channel printing data -- no need to yank it of a cmyk profile. Similar
to
QTR, I gather?
