I'm spending some time testing the accuracy of the profiles I create for my
Epson 4000 printer with the help of the usual profiling packages suspects.
I convert from CMYK to Lab and then from Lab to CMYK, through my printer
profile. I understand there are many issues here but at least I'm starting
with Lab colors that are all, be definition, in-gamut. Nothing different
here than Fraser, Murphy and Bunting treatment in RWCM 2nd Ed., pages
256-264.
The following is an example of the results I get wen comparing the original
measured Lab values to the roundtripped Lab values:
Mean 1.57
StdDev 0.91
Max 7.96
---
White 0.49
Black 4.21
---
Cyan 2.03
Mag 2.61
Yell 0.95
Red 1.99
Green 2.37
Blue 2.27
An average of 1.57 seems honorable for an inkjet profile. 0.91 of StdDev
seems plenty acceptable too. Max or 7.96 is high but occurs in 100Y 20M
(seems to be editable). White is a decent 0.96. Black is a cause for some
worry, I concur. Cyan and magenta are somewhat out of hand. Yellow is plenty
good. Red (100m 100Y), Green (100Y 100C) and Blue (100M 100C) are about the
same as cyan and magenta. Still within well acceptable limits.
So can I trust the colors my profiled Epson shows me? This is with no
iterative proofing or profile editing with an EFI Colorproof XF RIP.
Are these fair results in your opinion?
