If "noise" is something of a constant across the range then
don't more observations likely still increase the "signal" to "noise"
ratio?
Why not try printing multiple scales, then when measuring make multiple
measurements of each patch of each print, then average the results. Of
course, this is not something you would want to do for every profile
you make, but it may help to analyze whether increasing the number of
steps so high is causing any problems or helping. The more prints you
make and the more measurements per print, the closer the averaged
measurement will be to the "actual" value.
