Amadou,
The first Color Navigator sw allowed for adjustment of white point via color temperature. By virtue of the monitors contrast ratio, the black point would adjust automatically. The new version has a black point setting. This setting shows the two lowest choices of "minimum" or 0.5. The "minimum setting choosing 80cd/m for brighness would tune to about 0.2. At one of our premeir clients a Sony Artisan tuned could reach a .1 using a EG&G unit from Gamma Scientific for measurement. Eizo could consistently reach .19. I can say with some certainty that this is the best reading an LCD can reach, today.

Among the changes in Color Nav v3.0.1 is the ability to adjust a display's
black level. I'm going to assume that A) in prior versions the black level
was set automatically and B) leaving the "adjust black level" button
unchecked still adjusts it automatica!
lly. How
would one determine the
optimum value for the black level? In what scenerios would you NOT want the
calibration software to set it for you? Calibrating with this version,
measured luminance=120.3 cd/m2 and black level=.26 cd/m2. Is this range
good, bad, or middle of the road?

I can't say for Navigator but I can say that the numbers you have will give
you a fine calibration. The black is quite black and if you get all the
levels from 0 until 255 at 120cd/m2 then you hit a home run. If you find
some banding or lack of levels raise the black to 0.30 to 0.35.
