Hi Dale,
Think of your Bias controls as independent brightness control for each of
your 3 guns. In the same respect, you can consider your colortemp controls
(a.k.a gain, whitepoint, etc, etc...) to be individual contrast control for
each of your 3 guns.
Bias/Brightness will add a small amount of voltage to the gun output - while
gain/contrast works by amplifying the signal voltage. The gain/contrast will
typically have a nominal impact on the black point because the voltage is at
the lowest point and amplifying it doesn't do a lot. Conversely,
bias/brightness will have a lesser impact on the whitpoint because it adds a
relatively small amount of voltage compared to what the gun is delivering at
the whitepoint - where it is at maximum intensity. If you find that your
gain is maxed out, there is little left that a bias adjustment will add.
If you do decide to adjust the bias, I wouldn't stray too far away from a
visibly clean black. You could try using a combination of bias adjustments
for all 3 guns to keep your blackpoint neutral and possibly get a little
oomph out of your guns. If you were using MonacoOPTIX XR, you could set the
color balance mode to "dark" in the expert mode and use the instrument to
give you some feedback on how close to neutral you are.
Sad to say though, a CRT employs light-sensitive phosphors that grow immune
to electrical stimulation over time. There is a plethora of comedic
analogies that I could slice in here, but I will refrain. Suffice it to
say...many a display eventually retires.
Does anybody find it strange that - on a spelling check - Entourage
identified the word "colortemp" and suggested a replacement of "colostomy"?
You've gotta love this color management stuff!
