Hi,
Based on the research reported in the article on the Kruithof Curve, it
appears that a color temperature of around 3700 K produces the best viewing
temperature for art, with many observers making "observations about the
increase in the saturation of colors, the greater sense of depth within the
paintings, and the improved brightness and clarity of the paintings and of
the gallery space in general" for lighting with this color temperature.
Personally I chose Solux 3500K bulbs a few years ago for viewing my Epson
10000 pigment prints. I did this on the basis that it was similar to the
3000-3200 K temperature of halogen lighting found in most galleries. At the
time I was printing on Epson Premium Luster, a paper that showed significant
metamerism with Epson archival pigment inks. It seems that prints adjusted
to be most pleasing (to me) when viewed at 3500 K also minimized metamerism
when compared under both incandescent and skylight (a range from around 2000
to 7000 K). I have now almost completely switched to printing on fine art
cotton rag coated papers (particularly fond of Moab Entrada Natural at the
moment) and find that there is almost no metamerism with the 10000 inks.
However, I am pleased to find that my lighting choice reflects the findings
of contemporary research into the human response to viewing art under
varying lighting conditions. This is a most illuminating article. Cheers,
Tom Andrews
