<x-tad-bigger>She does a lot of layout in QuarkXPress and has notice that if she tints a
box at 10% or less it just doesn't show up (it is not just this program, I
am using this as the most obvious example).</x-tad-bigger>
Check your Universal Access system preference pane and make sure that "Enhance contrast" under "Seeing" is set to normal. Mine got changed somehow and caused the exact problem you describe (plus others) on the same equipment. It is not correct that the 23" Apple Cinema Display is incapable of showing subtle colors. Properly calibrated (preferably using a hardware calibrator as you have apparently done), it provides quite accurate color.
Another simple test: try it using a different user account. If the problem goes away and the above suggestion does not fix it, then it is probably another preference file (or some other settings file) that you can track down by systematic elimination. Changing the color temp or brightness should not cause what you describe. A very bad calibration could. So another strategy would be throw out the hardware calibrations and use the built-in Apple software calibrator or even just select the factory default profile. If those don't give you back your 10% tints, and the problem occurs in all user accounts, then maybe it is indeed a hardware problem. The perfect test of that would be a fresh system install (or booting from a fresh system on another partition or disk).
Good luck.
