I have been using colorthink to compare the gamut plot of three
profiles I have made for a Nikon 5000 ED scanner using a Provia Faust
IT8 target.
Having disabled the color management in Nikon Scan, and using the
default gamma of 2.2, the profile produced a gamut plot that was smooth
around the perimeter until it reached the deep blues/magentas where it
formed a confused looking twisted loop. A comparison of expected values
to actual values yielded a average DE = .68, Max DE 2.58
A profile made with a Gamma of 2.0 showed no distortion in the blue
region and yielded a average DE=.70, Max DE 2.85
A plot of a profile made with Vuescan yielded a plot that looks very
similar to the Gamma 2.0 from Nikonscan.
My question then is, given that the DE numbers are close, can it be
assumed that the gamut projection can be used as a deciding factor in
choosing the best gamma setting and is it likely that Vuescan also uses
a lower gamma than Nikonscan as a default?
Profiles made with PM 5, DE comparisons made according the RWCM ed1,
using measure tool and Colorlab.
I hope some scanning experts can shed some light on choosing the best
gamma.
Thanks
Simon
