What's an "instrument"?
A color measurement instrument, like a Spectrolino or DTP92/94.

it's physical; it defines everything else. When I say raster I mean from the
upper left corner to the lower right corner where the cathode ray is
striking the phosphors.
Most raster formats have a bunch of pixels, and also number(s) indicating
how many dots per inch/mm the pixels are meant to be. This translates
the pixels into a real world size.
