My Barco CRT display has a geometry calibration procedure that requires
(allows) setting the raster to a specific size. And with any CRT the
geometry can be "set" or "calibrated", but the controls for that are
not always as accessible. Perhaps that's a bit off the point.

Right, but the correct approach is to allow the user to calibrate
the screen (using a system tool, eg. System Preferences->Displays),
so that the system calls return correct information, and avoiding
the situation where every individual application has to provide
its own "calibrate screen size" function.
