- brightness (which fails to make much of a dent in the brightness)
That's expected as it controls the "black" point.
If it truely a brightness control; it may well be a backlight
control, which
controls the overall luminance instead...
I believe this is absolutely THE largest source of confusion for LCD
users and I'm sure I'm not totally clear on it either. It's easy on
my Apple Cinema because they don't give you any options, but it seems
most if not all "other" displays have "simulated" hardware
adjustments that are analogous to the hardware controls on a CRT, but
in name only. These "hardware" controls are actually software tweaks
of some sort either to the video card (or to "on-board LUTs" on the
high end Eizos and NECs) are they not?
When reading through the "instructions" for calibration with the
products I've tried, Optix XR Pro, Optical, EyeOne Display,
BasicColor, I can see where one could easily get confused. There
seems to be NO differentiation between "brightness" as in controlling
the black point (CRT - like) and "brightness" as in backlight
brightness. To add to the confusion it appears that many of the OSD
controls on the displays make no differentiation between the two either.
The way I understand it only the top end LCDs with on-board LUTs
should be "calibrated" with the likes of PreCal or other calibration
that requires the control of individual RGB values. And I think you
definitely don't want to control luminance on a "lesser" LCD by using
the RGB controls for the reasons C.David Tobie mentions.
The question, to me, is how does one KNOW whether the "brightness"
control on any given display is a backlight or a video card tweak?
What do you do if you have both brightness AND backlight buttons?
Where does the simulated "contrast" control enter in?
I've always been under the impression that the "brightness" button on
my Apple 20" was a backlight control, but if that is the case why
does my "native" whitepoint (as measured by Optix XR Pro) fluctuate
from 6500k at full brightness to 7000k at minimum brightness?
Thanks for any thoughts on the subject.
